Measure carefully, and allow for waste

The answer is only as good as the numbers you enter, and real rooms and plots are rarely perfect rectangles. When ordering flooring, paint or turf, measure twice and add a margin for offcuts and waste, professionals often add 10% or more.

Mind the units

Enter every dimension in the same unit, and remember the area comes out squared. Mixing feet and inches, or reading square feet as square yards, is an easy and costly mistake.
